Higgs fans get desperate

The Hadron-collider people are getting desperate, talking of a ‘hint’ of the Higgs boson in response to the arguments for its ‘colourful death’ (New Sci. 16 April p.8-9).

They have a lot of investment, material and cultural, in the Higgs, seen as keystone to the Standard Model – Brian Cox declares in the Sun (27 April) “Without it there would be nothing to speak of anywhere in the universe”. Yet earlier in the month he admitted in a tweet that other well-verified data could mean “RIP Standard Model” (New Sci. 16 April). He claims not to know the claim of a ‘hint’ has not been vetted – which means, New Scientist’s David Shiga blogged on 22 April, it could easily turn out to be wrong.
